What Is Toughened Glass?
Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is a high-strength safety glass designed for residential, commercial and architectural applications. Through a specialised heat treatment process, toughened glass becomes significantly stronger than standard float glass while maintaining excellent optical clarity.
Sydney Glass supplies and processes toughened glass in Sydney for builders, glaziers, shopfitters, homeowners and commercial contractors. Our in-house toughened glass processing capability allows us to provide custom glass solutions with reliable lead times and strict quality control.
IN-HOUSE PROCESSING
How The Toughening Process Works
The toughened glass manufacturing process begins with precision cutting, edge processing and fabrication. Once all required holes, notches and cut-outs have been completed, the glass is heated inside a toughening furnace to temperatures exceeding 600°C.
The glass is then rapidly cooled using high-pressure air. This process creates compression on the outer surfaces and tension within the core, producing toughened safety glass that is up to five times stronger than standard annealed glass.
Because toughened glass cannot be cut or modified after processing, all fabrication must be completed before the toughening process begins. Sydney Glass provides complete in-house glass cutting, polishing, fabrication and toughened glass processing from our Bankstown facility.
