What is Glass Toughening?

Glass toughening, also known as tempering, is a heat treatment process that increases the strength and safety of glass. During the process, glass is heated to high temperatures and then rapidly cooled, creating surface compression that makes the glass stronger and more impact resistant.

Once toughened, the glass becomes a safety glass and is designed to break into small granular pieces instead of large sharp shards.

Before Toughening

All cutting, polishing, holes, notches, cut-outs and water jet processing must be completed before the glass enters the toughening furnace. Once glass has been toughened, it cannot be cut, drilled or modified.

Toughening Process

The process starts with precision glass cutting and fabrication. After the glass is cut to size and all required edgework, holes and cut-outs are completed, the glass is placed into the toughening furnace.

The glass is heated to high temperatures and then rapidly cooled with controlled air pressure. This creates a stronger glass panel suitable for safety and performance applications.
